Welcome to the Democratic Women's Forum. Our mission is to endorse and financially support Democratic candidates.

Nearly eight decades ago, Eleanor Roosevelt and a group of civically engaged San Francisco women democrats created the Democratic Women's Forum (DWF). During the 1950s, under the influence of Adlai Stevenson, the organization began to endorse liberal, progressive candidates in local and national elections. Since that time DWF has endorsed numerous candidates and ballot initiatives based on our policy positions.

In addition to endorsing candidates and initiatives, DWF has battled injustices in San Francisco. We fought against the exclusion of African-Americans and Asians from duty-free stores, unfair wages for San Francisco restaurant workers, and policies that prevented women from getting credit cards or selling their own stock options without permission from their husbands.

DWF is chartered by the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee. We often combine forces with other democratic clubs in San Francisco to promote causes. Currently, DWF has a diverse membership that represents different ages, ethnicities and professions. Some of our notable members in politics include Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, Senator Barbara Boxer, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Congressman Tom Lantos, State Senator Carole Migden, State Senator Leland Yee, Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, Assemblymember Mark Leno,Mayor Gavin Newsom, Supervisor Chris Daly, Supervisor Tom Ammiano, City Attorney Dennis Herrera, Supervisor Sophie Maxwell, Supervisor Jake McGoldrick, Supervisor Aaron Peskin, District Attorney Kamala Harris, Sheriff Michael Hennessey, General Manager, Public Utilities Commission Susan Leal, and Vice-President, Board of Trustees, City College San Francisco Julio Ramos.

Endorsement Meeting

The Democratic Women's Forum and the Irish American Democratic Club will sponsor an Endorsement Meeting on January 16. 2008 from 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm at the State Building located at 455 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco.

Note: To vote during the endorsement meeting, you must be a member for 90 days and your dues must be current.

The Democratic Women's Forum presented the 2007 Eleanor Roosevelt Award to Dr. Bernice Biggs.

Bernice was multi-tasking long before the word was ever coined. An English Professor at San Francisco State University for 43 years, Bernice was also a wife, mother, grandmother, mentor, passionate advocate for the disenfranchised, stalwart community leader, and bird lover.

Bernice was president of the Democratic Women's Forum at a time when its existence was threatened. As a result of her leadership the Forum was strengthened and has continued to have an impacting presence in the political arena. Throughout her years in academia and politics Bernice has been able to successfully affect change in myriad ways, such as being a:

Leader in establishing the Women's Studies Department at SFSU
Founding member of Friends of the San Francisco Public Library
Co-founder of the Humanities Club (a means for seniors to take classes as SFSU)

Bernice also started the Women's Breakfast Group to help younger faculty members learn about campus politics and how to get promoted. Born in Alliance, Nebraska, Bernice is the recipient of two Fulbright Scholarships and received her Ph.D in Speech Communications from the University of Denver. She is the proud mother of four and the doting grandmother of six.

Active in the Democratic Party.

Drug Treatment
To advocate that Calfornia seek ways to divert funds allocated for prison expansion to drug treatment programs
To implement the initiative proposition that promotes drug treatment in lieu of incarceration for drug-addicted individuals

Housing
To work for more affordable housing

Homelessness
To advocate that San Francisco continue to take measures toward solutions of this multi-faceted problem

Transportation (San Francisco)
To promote a Transit First policy with more MUNI express service and increased number of runs; housing above commercial enterprises and on transit corridors; transportation on Geary, Van Ness, and Market; rebuilding the Transbay Terminal

Death Penalty
To oppose and work to end the death penalty

Health Care
To oppose Sutter Health's takeover of St. Luke's Hospital
To support San Francisco General Hospital's bond measure for health care for all in the city
To seek federal and state construction funding for city hospitals
